ABOUT THE WINE: Merlot was first introduced to Alto Adige around 130 years ago along with the other Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. As early as 1890, at a time when the majority of wine was still being sold in barrels, the first bottle of Merlot was being sold by the provincial research center at San Michele. The Brenntal zone borders on the northern ridge of the limestone massif upon which Kurtatsch is enthroned. A tightly meshed network of subterranean springs coming three directions carries mineral salts the mountains under the chalky earth of the plateau. Soils with limestone and porphyry gravel guarantee an optimal, natural drainage. These salts, which the water brings high elevations to the hot valley, determine the Alpine profile of "Brenntal" Merlot. The fresh mineral quality vibrates intensely on the palate, and the gossamer herbal aromas are a bond with the vegetation above the timber line. The limestone massif is like a heat sink that provides the Merlot berries with creamy, soft flesh. The tannins have a rare, fine graininess - they give a southern temperament to the fruit aromas that are typical of the zone (lingonberries, blackberries, cocoa, and green tea). With its long time on the yeast, the opulent "Brenntal" Merlot is enriched with autumnal tones that bring back a hearty echo of mushrooms and truffles.

The Kurtatsch Winery is one of the most important winegrowing cooperatives in South Tyrol and is located in the small municipality of Kurtatsch in the heart of the Überetsch region. The history of the winery goes back to 1900, when a few local winegrowers joined forces to produce wine together.

Today, the Kurtatsch Winery has around 200 members who cultivate over 20 different grape varieties on a total of around 190 hectares of vineyards. The winery relies on sustainable cultivation of the vineyards, which is supported by the use of modern technologies and careful manual work by the winegrowers.

The result is wines of the highest quality that regularly win awards at national and international competitions. The Kurtatsch winery is particularly well known for its white wines, first and foremost the Sauvignon Blanc, the Chardonnay and the Gewürztraminer. But also the red wines of the winery, such as the Lagrein or the Vernatsch, convince with their intensity and their balanced structure.

In addition to the high quality of its wines, the Kurtatsch Winery also stands out for its innovative strength. For example, it received an award for its "Cold Cellar" project, which significantly reduced the winery's energy consumption with the help of solar panels and geothermal energy.

All in all, the Kurtatsch Winery is one of the most important addresses for wines South Tyrol and stands for a successful combination of tradition and modernity, manual work and technology, as well as quality and sustainability.
