yr. 2010 Tom Cannavan:

96 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Penfolds Grange Bin 95, Australia" from the vintage 2010 on 01.01.1970 with 96 of 100 points.

"There’s 4% Cabernet Sauvignon joining the Shiraz, in a wine that spent 17 months in new American oak hogsheads. Fruit came from across South Australia as always. Fabulous concentration, mind-boggling intensity, so many layers packed into this, chocolate and liquorice, coffee and balsamic, meat-stock notes and serious black fruit at the core of it. Very tightly wound at present and unlike the Hill of Grace 2010 it would be criminal to drink this now: it’s a massive Grange of power, concentration and great purity, and will require many years in the cellar to show at its best – and age for 20 years at least."

yr. 2007 Tom Cannavan:

97 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Penfolds Grange Bin 95, Australia" from the vintage 2007 on 01.01.1970 with 97 of 100 points.

"Grange has been produced in every vintage since 1951, always from multiple vineyards and districts, and often with a little Cabernet in the blend (in this case 3%). It is matured for 21 months in all new American hogsheads and fruit this year came from Barossa, McLaren Vale and the Magill estate. It has a very bold, dark colour and the nose is already ravishing with sweet, ripe, totally focused fruit. A drive of juicy black fruits, edged with green peppercorns and a touch of smoky bacon, the fragrant spice of Sandalwood and coffee comes through. The palate is hugely sweet, with a massive, creamy texture and so much chocolaty ripeness, a touch of clove and a nice rasp of plum-skin tannin just to ruffle the velvet of the finish. Huge length and focus in a great Grange vintage, which Penfolds suggest will drink 2014-2045."

yr. 2001 Tom Cannavan:

95 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Penfolds Grange Bin 95, Australia" from the vintage 2001 on 01.01.1970 with 95 of 100 points.

"The blend for Grange this year is 99% Shiraz and only 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Whether or not that 1% can have much influence on the character of this wine is a moot point, but Peter Gago says the quality of this Cabernet was so good that it earned its place in Grange. For the first time ever, this Grange is made from all Barossa fruit and spent 17 months in all new American hogsheads. Chocolate and spice dominate the nose, with a great, dark, plummy, brooding presence. There are hints of tobacco and pepper, but this is mostly about a weight of ripe, thick black fruit. On the palate there are flavours of plum and Agen prunes, with huge concentration. Tannins are svelte and dense, with a liquoricy quality and lots of gripping texture. There is plenty of length here in a supple, outstanding Grange."

yr. 1997 Tom Cannavan:

92 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Penfolds Grange Bin 95, Australia" from the vintage 1997 on 01.01.1970 with 92 of 100 points.

"I have tasted every vintage of this wine since the 1989, and several older bottles too. Typically huge nose: a powerhouse of thick vanillin aromas, sweet and coconutty with plenty of bittersweet chocolate and vanilla-pod depth. The fruit is ripe and lush, with lots of tarry, meat-stock aromas too and thick black fruit. The palate is concentrated with a sweet core of dense black fruit. For the moment this is a muscular concentration of power: Oxo cubes, blood and black fruit are densely layered. Bolstered by warming, toasty oak and good tannin/acid structure, this finishes with ripe, creamy quality and good length. Penfolds have really pulled a fine Grange out of the bag in a moderate vintage."

yr. 1996 Tom Cannavan:

94 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Penfolds Grange Bin 95, Australia" from the vintage 1996 on 01.01.1970 with 94 of 100 points.

"I have tasted every vintage of this wine since the 1989, and several older bottles too. Its quality and consistency are formidable, though to deny there are vintage variations would be crazy. If I was a betting man, Id put money on this being a top-notch Grange. Fermented in 100% new American oak as always, this Grange is Shiraz, with around 6% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. It is dense and black, with a tight, glossy layering of fruit immediately apparent on the nose. Fantastically rich and sweet, black fruits are the main focus with a spicy, Dundee-cake richness underneath. On the palate it is chocolaty and very thick and dense, with a weight of dry, fruity flavour and crunch of sweet blackcurrant. Hints of chocolate, and the finish showing fine tannins and creamy, spicy oak against balanced acidity. Terrific purity of black fruits drive into a long finish. Very fine indeed."

yr. 1983 Tom Cannavan:

94 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Penfolds Grange Bin 95, Australia" from the vintage 1983 on 01.01.1970 with 94 of 100 points.

"Fantastically dark, dense and opaque colour for the year. Gorgeous ripe fruit on the nose with that savoury, leathery cedar-wood character this wine develops with bottle age. Very appealing. There's still a fantastic super-ripeness of fruit - very sweet and dusty black fruits and brown sugar - and first class concentration. On the palate all elements are beautifully integrated and there's lots of oak, blackcurrant, orange, spice and coffee. Long, focused and lovely. Plenty of time ahead of it too."

yr. 1995 Tom Cannavan:

92 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Penfolds Grange Bin 95, Australia" from the vintage 1995 on 01.01.1970 with 92 of 100 points.

"Dark, opaque crimson. Very deep, concentrated fruit on the nose: a seam of rich blackcurrant and mulberry dusted with spice and black coffee. Very tight, very focused. I'd guess this was Grange. Background of cedar and pencil-shavings. On the palate very densely-textured with fine tannins that are ripe and of high quality. The mouthfeel is creamy and this has lovely balance. Good length, with tannins coating the tongue as it finishes."

yr. 1994 Tom Cannavan:

90 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Penfolds Grange Bin 95, Australia" from the vintage 1994 on 01.01.1970 with 90 of 100 points.

"Dark, quite earthy red. An older wine. Again mulberry fruit is typically Australian. Hints of over ripeness again, minty and super-rich, but pure and clean with subtle hints of cedar and vanilla, then classy charred oak. The palate has a good concentration of cherry, berry and black fruit with bags of oak giving a creamy, spicy foundation. Tannins and acidity are both quite dominant at present and the fruit doesn't quite survive into the moderately long finish. Very young and worth trying again in a few years."

yr. 1989 Tom Cannavan:

93 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Penfolds Grange Bin 95, Australia" from the vintage 1989 on 01.01.1970 with 93 of 100 points.

"Dense purple. Ah! what a nose: ultra-rich New World shiraz. Port-like, massive, unctuous sweet fruit, dense with a velvety black chocolate richness. Stunning nose. Palate carries this through in a really silky, vanilla-infused power of opulent black fruit and spice. Incredibly long, the tannins are supportive but soft, and the acidity beautifully integrated. Very, very fine."

yr. 1966 Tom Cannavan:

92 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Penfolds Grange Bin 95, Australia" from the vintage 1966 on 01.01.1970 with 92 of 100 points.

"These were bottles "reconditioned" by Penfolds, that is any ullage topped up with reserved wine (of the same vintage I wonder?) and re-corked. Very dark ruby/brown. Still quite dense with a tawny rim. The nose is very cedary and claret-like, with pencil-shavings and meaty, slightly bloody notes. The wine is very thickly textured and intense. It has an extraordinary sweetness of fruit and body almost like Port. There are still big drying tannins and loads of extract. A concentration of spice and, though low in acidity, the tannins do just enough to leave it quite fresh and grippy. To me this wine is a little cloying and lacks the finesse of the previous wines."

yr. 1993 Tom Cannavan:

94 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Penfolds Grange Bin 95, Australia" from the vintage 1993 on 01.01.1970 with 94 of 100 points.

"Absolutely opaque, inky black colour. Stunning nose. Intense, pure core of sweet black fruit with thick, dusty blueberry and bramble depth. This is Grange! Absolutely pure, driven fruit on the palate with some delicious peppery notes and layers of chocolate, coffee and liquorice. Seems to be more complex than the '92 was at this stage. Stunning, structured, extracted and immense, yet harmonious, pure and delicious. Terrific."

yr. 1992 Tom Cannavan:

94 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Penfolds Grange Bin 95, Australia" from the vintage 1992 on 01.01.1970 with 94 of 100 points.

"What makes this wine so wonderful is its singleness of purpose - it's like a shaft of laser light being shone down a long, dark tunnel. The colour is black and dense. Immensely smooth, concentrated aromas of crunchy black fruits, hints of clove, nutmeg and cedar. Piercingly direct, authoritative black fruit flavours on the palate. Minty and creamy, highly toasted oak evident. Dense, smoky, enveloping purity of fruit. Thick and unctuous texture. Finish stays in pin-sharp focus with balance and authority. The wine is so focused down one path of integrated, pure fruit essence, but not at all one-dimensional. Quite something."
