"The oldest winery in Margaret River delivers, as usual, a powerful yet elegant wine expressive of place, people and vintage. The nose is lucid yet broody. Layers of flavor include fresh cherry, dried violets, eucalyptus, white pepper and a signature sea-brine nuance, all backed by well-placed chocolatey oak. "(2022) The blend includes Petit Verdot 8% and Malbec 2%, 20 - 40 years old grown on well-drained gravel loam soils. A small proportion saw carbonic maceration, and the wine was aged in French oak barriques (44% new) for 18 months. A year since I last tasted this, and the impression is much the same: lifted and fragrent, the olive/tapenade hint of the herbal adds a smoky savouriness to the sweet and solid black fruit. On the palate a tongue-coating raft of thick black fruit and creamy tannin, smokier barrel components combining with brighter cherry acid for a long, fruit and acid-driven finish."

"It's hard to believe that this is Vasse Felix's middle-tier red, such is its pedigree. With a little Malbec and Petit Verdot in the mix, this Cabernet is classic Margaret River, balancing power and structure with complexity and poise. Evoking the springtime scents of this coastal region, it billows ripe red currents, eucalyptus, sage, beach scrub and sea spray. Set up for aging, tannins are fine and vice-like and the oak is fairly prominent, but all should settle into place with a few more years in bottle. Drink now until 2029. Christina Pickard"

"(2009) A little Malbec in this too. Difficult vintage, but Virginia really likes a lot of the wines that have come good. Herbal notes here, with a definite character of sage leaves that are in the herbal spectrum, but again Virginia's argument is persuasive that this is not under-ripeness, but a savoury herb quality of the region. The palate has a fine black fruit quality, with an earthy, juicy quality that powers through. The tannins are ripe, just adding a chewiness to the quite fat berry fruits and well-balanced acidity."

The fat, sweet fruit, is more glossy and full on the nose and onto the palate, more into the cassis spectrum, the oak building in the finish to give lots of savoury, dry tannin - fruit tannin that is firm but has a certain juiciness. Lovely finish too. Lots of sweetness."

"Medium deep, ruby-red with a slightly fading rim. The nose is quite intense. Combining, some herbal and floral notes. There is a slight presence of aromatic herbs like mint and sage. The fruit is on the sweeter side, with hints of cassis, red currant and plum. There is a slight oakiness in the background, but predominantly that herb infused fruitiness. The palate has medium weight, a bit more than medium weight I would say. With a good density of fruit, those red and dark berries still with a slightly youthful texture and presence of tannin. Quite long and lingering finish, combining that juicy dark and red berries. Fresh acidity and a lot of spiciness going on in the finish. With some hints of pepper and aromatic herbs, such as mint and sage. I would still call this a fairly youthful wine, it is certainly drinkable, particularly after thirty minutes in a decanter or something in that direction. However, I think this is a wine that has the density and concentration to gain much more complexity over the coming four to six years."
