"The beautiful DNA of Cabernet makes itself felt in the wet stone and graphite scent that carries poised, dark fruit. Gentle smoke mingles with dark berry and comes with an edge of tobacco that seems to be the first stirring of evolution. The palate is taut and structured but amidst the welcome Cabernet rigour, the absolute juiciness and exuberance of the fruit is undeniable. Balance and harmony are writ large, a salty touch of soy informs the long finish."

"Initially there is a touch of leather, followed by a hint of cigar and more of that wet stone and earth character, buttressed by vivid, aromatic and almost floral fruit that has all the juiciness of a red-fleshed plum. The sinuous palate has beautiful freshness that seems to underline the translucent brightness of this wine. This is bold but utterly elegant. Echoes of vanilla follow the velvety tannins that have such a pleasant crunch. Wave upon wave of aroma follows, finishing long with a hint of smoke. Drink by 2050."

A lovely sense of pine needle on wet earth frames both nose and palate. Quietly and gently at first, a pure, pristine note of tiny wild blueberry starts to soar. Fine freshness informs the long, earthy, profound finish."

"An exquisitely spicy nose is redolent of conifer and lichen, of a sense of crushed pine needle, a lifted, perfumed note that makes the plum fruit take flight. The palate has an earthier aspect and a core of rounded, ripe, generous fruit, seemingly dusted with cinnamon. There is a lovely agility in the wine, freshness and an almost floral echo. Tannins and freshness seem to heighten each other's presence into a mouth-watering crescendo."

"The most serene note of menthol hovers above notes pf graphite, plum and berry. There is a perfumed streak of hayflowers and crushed, dried yarrow. The palate then redoubles on that lovely savouriness and adds beautiful white pepper notes to juicy plum and berry compote notes that have a lovely lick of smoky vanilla. The fine tannins seem to frame immense juiciness."

"(2021) A long, mild season, with slower ripening of the fruit. Dense and deep, a touch of lighter orange on the rim. Just a gorgeous and clasic nose, pencil-shaving and graphite, a deep, mulled plum and blackcurrant fruit, that fatness of mulberry, but so much spice from the Shiraz and barrel. The cooler vintage comes through with very good acidity and intensity, dry and savoury fruit, but such sweet ripeness at the core. Very juicy, very gastronomic, with saltiness and spice into a long finish. A lovely cooler-climate style this."

"(2021) Colour-wise, back to that slightly softer red like the 2012. Aromatically this is quite fruit and fragrance-driven, with cherry and blackcurrant, a hint of brighter raspberry and leafy/floral spices, the verdant touch of the Cabernet evident. In the mouth a real welterweight of fruit and substance, loads of fat textured fruit, but then dusty, fine tannins sweep through, tangy fruit-skin acidity and savoury dryness, and masses of spice into the finish. Available in-bond as a three-pack at time of review, approximate single bottle price quoted."

"(2021) Darker, more opaque and less developed in colour, this is much more driven by the ripe, taut, creamy black fruit than by the cedar and spice aromatically, a great creaminess and deep pool of aromas that are much more Shiraz (in fact, this did have an unusually high percentage of Shiraz for this wine, at 45%). Very intense on the palate - different from the 2012 too - with dry, intense plum and plum skins, great concentration and purity, and again that saltiness in the finsh melding with the vanillin from French oak. Intense, delicious."

"(2021) More youthful colour, but much more deep ruby/black than purple, the nose an amalgam of bright glossy fruit and spice, a slick of vanilla and some background game or meaty, curry-leaf notes. Lovely palate - there is that meaty and meat-stock balsamic edge to this, very dense fruit, concentrated and intense, if relatively straightforward at this stage. Tannins are firm, powerful, but fine, the overall feel still quite smooth, sleek and powerful, with good juicy and, again, salty acidity. One to watch as it develops, with further in-bottle improvement is very likely. Available in-bond as a three-pack at time of review, approximate single bottle price quoted."

"This is Yalumba's most premium wine, and it's easy to see why. It blends Coonawarra Cabernet with Barossa Shiraz for a classy, complex wine that could be drunk over the next few years with lengthy time in decanter, but will really blossom over the next decade or even two. Once exposed to oxygen, it starts to reveal a plethora of enticing aromas, from bushels of red and black fruits to dark chocolate and coffee beans; from iodine to dried mint and tobacco. The palate is big yet focused, seamlessly melding the forest fruit with the earthy, dried herbal notes and oak spice, all supported by powerful, leathery tannins. Drink 2021-2039. Christina Pickard"

"The first release of this premium red from one of Australia's most well-known wine brands, this is a blend of 79% Cabernet from Coonawarra and 21% Shiraz from Barossa. It's the former that really shines. The nose is a rich combo of cherry, raspberry, cracked pepper, thyme, eucalyptus and pine, with flecks of earth and cola-like oak notes. Tannins are tightly wound but not monstrous, and fruit remains juicy even with seven years of age. The structure indicates plenty more life left in this full-bodied, classic red.
