"Located between Lontué and Molina, the Manso de Velasco Vineyard is about 120 years old, probably the oldest cabernet sauvignon in Chile, or at the very least, among the oldest in the country. The wine was first released in 1985 and has maintained a succulent and very ripe style ever since. This year seems to be the vintage of change, of a different path. With this vintage, winemaker Eduardo Jordán has begun to give it a bit more freshness and lightness, decreasing the number of new barrels from 40% to 11%, shifting just under half of the 18-month aging time to foudres and choosing lots that were more vertical, with more pronounced acidity, and lighter. And that comes through in the final result, in a Manso that's more drinkable without losing the style of sweet spices and ripe red fruits it has always had. Manso fans are will not feel betrayed."

The wine was aged in barrels for 15 months, with 70% new oak. This is a classic. The first vintage was the 1985, and it has delivered great reds with little fanfare and unwavering consistency ever since. And this version is one of them. It has tense acidity, with a framework of steely tannins and delicious sweet fruit, but it also has that earthy tone that provides great complexity and character. A great vintage of Manso."

"Given that 2009 was a hot vintage in Chile, it's not shocking that this old vine Cabernet is rich, ripe and syrupy. The nose is attractive and offers aromas of blackberry, tree bark, herbs and minerality. The palate deals gritty tannins and rich, raisiny flavors of cassis, blackberry, coffee and toast. This finishes a touch choppy and rough, with weight and power. Drink through 2016."

Masses of chocolate and spice, with some herbal notes, but an underlying blackcurrant richness. Palate is thick and sweet and has great palate weight and ripeness and a thick, ripe tannins structure. A massive wine, but impressive."
