Sassicaia DOC - 1996 - Tenuta S. Guido

Allergic-Info: This wine can contain sulfites

yr. 1985 Doctorwine:

98 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1985 on 27.05.2016 with 98 of 100 points.

"International critics consider this to be the greatest Sassicaia of all time. The wine has an intensely dark and concentrated ruby color with garnet reflections. The bouquet is complex and exceptionally concentrated, broad and persistent with notes of tar and spice. The mouthfeel is ?thick? and has great structure, incredibly rich and concentrated yet at the same time harmonious, with sensations of licorice and sweet wood. The persistence is very long."

yr. 1977 Doctorwine:

92 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1977 on 27.05.2016 with 92 of 100 points.

"Another surprise, the product of a year that elsewhere in Tuscany was truly disappointing. This Sassicaia has a concentrated, ruby-garnet color with a brick-red edge and is still bright. The aromas are fine with scents, which are understandably a bit evolved, of sour cherry jam and tamarind along with notes of leather. The mouthfeel is full and balanced and has a great, pleasing sensation and tannins that are sweet and fine. The persistence is excellent and the concentration good."

yr. 1975 Doctorwine:

92 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1975 on 27.05.2016 with 92 of 100 points.

"An excellent vintage for Sassicaia that recalls the ?82 but is better. The color by now is distinctly garnet with brick-red reflections and the concentration is good. The bouquet is evolved with scents of tar, mushroom and dried fruit and it is clear the aromas have come to the end of their bottle aging cycle. The mouthfeel is still rich, full and elegant with tannins that are evident but not bitter and the persistence is excellent."

yr. 1984 Doctorwine:

91 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1984 on 27.05.2016 with 91 of 100 points.

"This year was a disaster in the rest of Tuscany but here it produced a wine of rare nobility. Its ruby color is of medium intensity and there are ample, intense and persistent fruit aromas of ripe prune and blueberry. The mouthfeel is soft with a medium structure and a persistence. The aftertaste has a pleasing sensation of red fruit, the same as in the aroma."

yr. 1972 Doctorwine:

90 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1972 on 27.05.2016 with 90 of 100 points.

"This was one of the worst years for wine in the past 50 years and yet it miraculously produced an excellent Sassicaia. The wine has a garnet color with brick-red reflections and good concentration. The bouquet respectfully shows its age without evident signs of oxidation. The aromas are bottle-aged and complex with scents of dried fruit, mushroom and tar that still maintain a surprising intensity without becoming sherry-like. The mouthfeel is harmonious, the tannins have completely settled and allow for extremely elegant, velvety sensations. This was the first year the wine aged in 225-liter French barriques."

yr. 1981 Doctorwine:

90 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1981 on 27.05.2016 with 90 of 100 points.

"An interesting vintage, the product of a cool and rainy growing season. The garnet/amaranth color has a distinct red-brick edge and the complex bouquet has very particular and quite pleasing vegetal aromas including eucalyptus and tamarind, while the finesse is good but not exceptional. The mouthfeel is perfectly balanced with a full structure, good persistence and tannins that are less aggressive and bitter than in the ?82."

yr. 1982 Doctorwine:

89 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1982 on 27.05.2016 with 89 of 100 points.

"A certainly interesting wine but with characteristics that are showing their age a little too prematurely. The garnet color has red-brick tones and the aroma is intense, wrapping, and evolved with complex scents of tamarind and truffle. The mouthfeel is bold, broad and soft with a touch of licorice and tannins that are a little bitter. The persistence is good."

yr. 1983 Doctorwine:

89 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1983 on 27.05.2016 with 89 of 100 points.

"A valid version but less so than one would have expected considering the favorable growing season. The color is an intense ruby with reflections that lean towards garnet and has an average concentration. The bouquet is showing the first signs of age with scents of mushroom, tar and ripe, red fruit. The mouthfeel is still full and the tannins are still lively."

yr. 1980 Doctorwine:

86 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1980 on 27.05.2016 with 86 of 100 points.

"This is similar to the 1979 but with the structure of the 1974. It has a garnet color with orange reflections and the evolved aromas are have a medium complexity. The flavor is not perfectly harmonious even if the mouthfeel is certainly more balanced than the previous year. The persistence is good."

yr. 1974 Doctorwine:

85 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1974 on 27.05.2016 with 85 of 100 points.

"The growing season was unfavorable due to excessive rain and inconsistent temperatures. Nevertheless, once again Sassicaia defended itself in a dignified way and today the aromas are still broad, with vegetal notes and a pleasing flavor, even if the acidity has broken up a little. The structure of the mouthfeel is average because the tannins did not full develop."

yr. 1971 Doctorwine:

85 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1971 on 27.05.2016 with 85 of 100 points.

"A favorable summer for Cabernet Sauvignon with little rain and balanced and average temperatures. The wine was made in open, 20hl Slavonian vats and maceration lasted seven days with frequent treading to bring out the best from grapes rich in extracts. The result is a rich, fragrant and nicely evolved wine with a balanced mouthfeel thanks to nicely polymerized tannins. The persistence is good."

yr. 1979 Doctorwine:

84 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1979 on 27.05.2016 with 84 of 100 points.

"This is one of the less convincing vintages. The wine has a garnet color with orange reflections and bottle-aged, evolved aromas of jam and fruit preserved in spirits that have a nice concentration and a medium complexity. The structure of the mouthfeel is not great and the acidity seems to be breaking up, while the persistence is discreet. There seems little possibility it will evolve further in the bottle."

yr. 1970 Doctorwine:

80 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1970 on 27.05.2016 with 80 of 100 points.

"This was the first Sassicaia to be produced on a large scale (69,000 bottles) and due to problems in the winery it would be another ten years before such quality was achieved. The growing season was relatively good with the right amount of sun and sufficient rainfall to guarantee excellent grapes. Maceration took place in open, 20hl Slavonian vats and the wine aged 16 months in Slavonian oak barriques made in Conegliano Veneto. The bouquet is still intense and the tannins are balanced in the structure. The softness is good."

yr. 1976 Doctorwine:

78 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1976 on 27.05.2016 with 78 of 100 points.

"The weather this year, if possible, was even worse than the ?72 due to a very wet summer that compromised the grapes even if they did ripen sufficiently. Maceration was brief because the tannins were few both quantity and quality-wise although sufficient to withstand 18 months aging in barriques. While this Sassicaia has good character, it is not very harmonious and is definitely evolved to the nose. The unbalance between acidity and tannins in the mouthfeel is quite evident."

yr. 1968 Doctorwine:

75 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1968 on 27.05.2016 with 75 of 100 points.

"The year is only indicative given that this was a blend of wines from 1967, ?68 ? which represented the lion?s share ? and ?69 with a small addition from ?65. Today it is virtually impossible to find a bottle and the few that remains can cost over 2,000 euros. The color is a distinct brick-red and is moderately concentrated. The bouquet is evolved and has some signs of oxidation while the aromas are those of walnut preserved in spirits and tar. The flavor has begun to go off even if the tannins are still present and the sensations from oxidation still do not dominate."

yr. 1988 Doctorwine:

98 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1988 on 26.05.2016 with 98 of 100 points.

"This was Giacomo Tachis? favorite vintage and he considered it to be even better than the ?85. The ruby color is intensely concentrated, profound and certainly now what one would expected from a wine of its age. The aromas are complex and concentrated with intense and elegant scents of red fruit. The mouthfeel is bold, concentrated and full with sweet tannins. The pleasing persistence has an after-aroma that brings back the bouquet."

yr. 1998 Doctorwine:

98 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1998 on 26.05.2016 with 98 of 100 points.

"A great year for Sassicaia and Bolgheri in general. This was one of the best vintages of the ?90s. The color is an intense ruby-garnet and the aromas have incredible integrity and are unusually complex. There are balsamic notes along with those of wild berries and sweet spice, with light scents of tar and underbrush. The impact of the mouthfeel is excellent and overall it is balanced, nicely taut thanks to the acidity, still elegant and whole. The finish is decidedly persistence."

yr. 1995 Doctorwine:

94 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1995 on 26.05.2016 with 94 of 100 points.

"A late year with grapes ripening after August 15 and harvest postponed to early October. The wine has a bright and intense ruby color and incredibly lively aromas that are balsamic and full with notes of berry jam and hints of underbrush. The mouthfeel is agile and elegant, still very young, with an excellent acidity and a subtle yet long aftertaste."

yr. 1997 Doctorwine:

92 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1997 on 26.05.2016 with 92 of 100 points.

"A hot and somewhat dry growing season produced a bold, rich Sassicaia that seemed like a lesser 1988. It has an intense, ruby-garnet color and ethereal, wrapping and slightly evolved aromas with notes of tamarind and sour cherry jam, followed by those of damp earth and some hints of chocolate-covered cherries. The flavor is warm and wrapping, saline, full-bodied and a tad tannic, while the long aftertaste is somewhat bitter."

yr. 1990 Doctorwine:

90 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1990 on 26.05.2016 with 90 of 100 points.

"This was a valid year but not a ?happy? one considering expectations. The wine has an intense and concentrated ruby color but it is less bright than the ?92. The aromas are intense and concentrated with notes of vanilla, red fruit (Marasca cherry) and a hint of hay. The persistent mouthfeel is also intense and concentrated and the pleasing aftertaste is of red fruit and although the mouthfeel is soft, the tannins are a bit aggressive. This wine is still young and heavy, ?big? rather than great."

yr. 1992 Doctorwine:

90 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1992 on 26.05.2016 with 90 of 100 points.

"A surprising vintage considering this was not an exceptional year for Tuscan reds. But Sassicaia has accustomed us to such performances. The intense ruby-garnet color has a nice concentration and is very lively, while the aromas are still distinct with pronounced scents of vanilla on red fruit. The mouthfeel is full, elegant and concentrated with sweet and balanced tannins and the persistence is decidedly long."

yr. 1999 Doctorwine:

90 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1999 on 26.05.2016 with 90 of 100 points.

"Another excellent year, perhaps a bit warmer than the 2000. The ruby-garnet color has a good intensity and the aromas are ethereal and wrapping with notes of red fruit preserved in spirits, tamarind and a few hints of dried flowers. The tannins are a bit more pronounced and slightly bitter, a sign of aging, while the aftertaste is warm and the persistence good."

yr. 1996 Doctorwine:

89 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1996 on 26.05.2016 with 89 of 100 points.

"A ?small? vintage due to rain during harvest. This Sassicaia is lithe but has an excellent elegance, similar in a way to a Burgundy, mutatis mutandis . The ruby-garnet color is bright but the intensity is average and the bouquet is of floral and balsamic notes with scents of violet eucalyptus and berry jam on a background of underbrush. The mouthfeel is delicate but whole, tannic and with an excellent acidity and a subtle persistence of average length."

yr. 1991 Doctorwine:

88 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy" from the vintage 1991 on 26.05.2016 with 88 of 100 points.

"This was not an exceptional year but the incredible combination of environmental and climatic factors in Bolgheri?s terroir once again allowed for the creation of a wine far above the norm. The bouquet is slightly spicy and has notes of sweet wood, pepper and a hint of herbs. The mouthfeel has an average concentration and a pleasing aftertaste of red fruit with a nice persistence."
