ABOUT THE WINE: Until the mid 1980s the two Burgundian varieties Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay were both known as Weissburgunder in South Tyrol, the former as Grüner (green) Weissburgunder, the latter as Gelber (yellow) Weissburgunder. The two 'Burgunder' vines were introduced into South Tyrol in the 1860s. Pichl is a southwest facing vineyard on calcareous soils close to the hamlet of Penon which perches on the incredibly steep mountainside above Kurtatsch. The prime parts of the site face south overlooking the Adige Valley. Here the soil layers rich in calcium carbonate are medium-deep to deep with irregular veins of clay and quartz. The 'Pichl' Chardonnay is characterised by firm, mouth-watering acidity, a taut wine reminiscent in aroma of an Oriental fruit market with hints of banana, vanilla, biscuits and dried fruits. In spite of its creamy texture it has a bracingly acidulous finish in which the flavour of southern fruit is accompanied by balsamic spice discreetly reminiscent of walnut.
