ABOUT THE WINE: Merlot was first introduced to Alto Adige around 130 years ago along with the other Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. As early as 1890, at a time when the majority of wine was still being sold in barrels, the first bottle of Merlot was being sold by the provincial research center at San Michele. Merlot vines have extremely deep roots which penetrate the warmest sand and gravel soils of Kurtatsch in order to absorb the rock salts the subterranean aquifers. In the Mediterranean climate of Kurtatsch, the Merlot wine has a core of fruit with body and fullness, and the soft, enticing tannins float around the palate. An earthy tone reminiscent of porcini mushrooms is a direct reference to its terroir as the wine continues to cling to the soil of Kurtatsch even in the bottle.

It is full ruby in colour with violet reflexes, fresh and intensely fruity on the nose, fragrant with a flavour of woodland berry fruits on the palate and a lightly almondy finish. The wine's succulent, gentle fruity character , soft, unobtrusive tannins and mild supple acidity make it a favourite for social drinking.
