Villa Nigra is the Latin name fort he Scharzhaus ("Black House") estate, a vineyard as if made for producing fine Pinto Noir of top international standing. The strongly contrasting temperatures between day and night time enables Pinot grapes to develop their intense classic varietal character, reminiscent of raspberry, morello cherry and blackberry. An elegantly-structured wine, slender with smooth ripe tannins on the finish
Description: Purple red in colour with garnet reflexes; seductive aromas of crushed red fruits, cherry, damson and hints of cinnamon on the nose; medium-bodied, supple and luscious on the palate with flavours of black and red berries, a nuance of oak spice and velvety tannins.
Food Choices: Try it with roast duck with hoi sin, baked salmon in a crust of soy sauce, mignon fillet with a balsamic glaze, roast lamb with mint sauce. Serve cool, 16°C
Grape Variety: 100 % Pinot Noir partially Guyot (vertical wire) trellised vines planted at high density, and partly very old pergola-trained vines.
Sites: The Schwarzhaus vineyard (Villa Nigra in Latin), at Girlan/Eppan at an altitude of 400 metres. The site is southwest facing with gravelly morainal soils with a significant calcium carbonate content. The microclimate is cool.
Yield: 45 hl/ha
Winemaking: The estate-grown grapes vines are de-stemmed, crushed and partially cold macerated before being fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks at a constant 25-28°C with regular pumping over. The wine is then transferred to part new, part used French oak barriques for malolactic conversion and 12 months' ageing.
