1. Cru classé Graves - 1989 - Château Haut-Brion

Alcoholic content: 13.00 %

yr. 1974 Doctorwine:

98 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Chateau Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan, France" from the vintage 1974 on 01.01.1970 with 98 of 100 points.

"An intense, garnet color and loads of tobacco in the nose before the bouquet opens its peacock tail of aromas with licorice, porcini mushroom and bark in abundance. The mouthfeel has a frightening tension and is very fresh, upright and austere. A formidable wine."

yr. 1994 Tom Cannavan:

94 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Chateau Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan, France" from the vintage 1994 on 01.01.1970 with 94 of 100 points.

"At 22 years old the Haut-Brion 1994 has a broad amber rim, and a red oxide colour. On the nose there is plenty of game and forest floor, briary character, graphite and pencil-shavings, and a sweet black berry fruit is there in the mix. In the mouth it has marvelous, blood-streaked and mineral character: true Graves, with the savoury black fruit touched by olive and game, the tannins very refined and now quite modest, and the alacrity of good natural acidity and its lowly 12.5% alcohol shining through. It perhaps lacks the final ounce of generosity to command the highest score, and it is hard to say whether more time in the cellar will be rewarded, but it has a relatively austere beauty and is a terrific wine that oozes class from first sip to last."

yr. 2012 Gilbert & Gaillard:

96 of 100 Points.

"Gilbert & Gaillard" has rated the wine "Chateau Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan, France" from the vintage 2012 on 01.01.1970 with 96 of 100 points.

"EN PRIMEUR - Elegant, profound nose with racy oak, a mineral touch and black fruits. The palate is also racy despite a certain alcoholic presence. Dense, ripe and tightly-wound tannins with expressive fruit. A fairly classic and very promising style."

yr. 2011 Gilbert & Gaillard:

94 of 100 Points.

"Gilbert & Gaillard" has rated the wine "Chateau Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan, France" from the vintage 2011 on 01.01.1970 with 94 of 100 points.

"EN PRIMEUR - Muted on the nose with a hint of fruit but mostly oak. On the palate, power, concentration and robust tannins marked by oak. Still stocky and firm capped off with a slight oaky bitterness. Muted, as always, in its youth."

yr. 2009 Gilbert & Gaillard:

96 of 100 Points.

"Gilbert & Gaillard" has rated the wine "Chateau Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan, France" from the vintage 2009 on 01.01.1970 with 96 of 100 points.

"Intense hue. Subtle nose of ripe red berry fruits and evident oak. On the palate, power and heat are juxtaposed against a tightly-wound, firm texture. Totally mute and austere at present. Most likely huge potential."

yr. 2010 Gilbert & Gaillard:

97 of 100 Points.

"Gilbert & Gaillard" has rated the wine "Chateau Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan, France" from the vintage 2010 on 01.01.1970 with 97 of 100 points.

"Intense crimson. Ripe, focused nose of ripe red fruits with delicate oak. Rich, full palate framed by fat. Well-structured finish delivering a sensation of firmness and austerity in a warm setting. Wonderful potential."

yr. 2010 Tom Cannavan:

98 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Chateau Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan, France" from the vintage 2010 on 01.01.1970 with 98 of 100 points.

"Dense in colour, fabulously invitingly, richly fruited and intense aromatic power wafts from the glass here and puts a huge smile on your face before you've even tasted it; there's a lovely density and purity of ripe, dark berry fruitiness here bringing seductive opulence in its wake with dark chocolate to the mid-palate but all reined in and restrained by a firm yet elegant backbone of tannin and fresh acidity that bring great length, balance and finesse. This is very fine and beautifully balanced."

yr. 2007 Gilbert & Gaillard:

98 of 100 Points.

"Gilbert & Gaillard" has rated the wine "Chateau Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan, France" from the vintage 2007 on 01.01.1970 with 98 of 100 points.

"Black fruit aromas, a touch of blackcurrant, and burnt notes. Dense palate and elegant structure define this superbly-crafted, classic style. An extremely classy wine and a sure bet."

yr. 2007 Tom Cannavan:

93 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Chateau Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan, France" from the vintage 2007 on 01.01.1970 with 93 of 100 points.

"Fine, scented, almost floral, some raspberry notes, faintly reminiscent of Burgundy. Lots of fruit and substance, serious tannins, definitely the structure to keep and improve. Very bright fruit, long."

yr. 2005 Tom Cannavan:

96 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Chateau Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan, France" from the vintage 2005 on 01.01.1970 with 96 of 100 points.

"I almost always prefer Haut-Brion to its sister wine, La Mission, whether young or old, good, bad or moderate vintage. La Mission is usually excellent, but somehow Haut-Brion just beguiles where La Mission merely seduces. But La Mission is so good in this vintage that I wondered how Haut-Brion would fare. I need not have worried: from the first sniff this wine is outstanding. It has a haunting fragrance that is cedary and elegantly mineral, with a beautiful sense of poise and precision. The fruit is fully ripe, plummy and lush, but everything is imbued with that minerality and layered complexity. Huge fruit and earthy minerality on the palate, where the big, structured tannins are integrated and managed beautifully along with lovely acidity, to give focus, length and a sense of lightness. One of the best wines of the vintage."

yr. 2006 Tom Cannavan:

95 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Chateau Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan, France" from the vintage 2006 on 01.01.1970 with 95 of 100 points.

"Gorgeous sweet, ripe, plummy black fruit. With an almost minty ripeness and plushness, but a hint of something more mineral. Lovely sweetness and juicy ripeness on the palate. Really gorgeous tannin quality - outstanding for this vintage. Very long, with extremely good quality. Tannins are dry, but the whole wine is imbued with a gorgeous sense of fleshiness and svelteness. Delicious and, for me, the star wine of the left bank."
