1. Cru classé Margaux - 1990 - Château Margaux

Alcoholic content: 12.50 %

yr. 1985 Tom Cannavan:

97 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Chateau Margaux, Margaux, France" from the vintage 1985 on 01.01.1970 with 97 of 100 points.

"In Bordeaux, 1985 is my favourite vintage bar none. Yes, '61 may be more legendary, '49 more revered, but I have bought and drunk a lot of '85s over the past 30 years with unfailing success in the wines being both sumptuous and structured, in an immensely pleasurable vintage. This Margaux may be the pinnacle, a heavenly depth of graphite and cedar-touched ripe, but not overripe, black fruits, the lightest nuances of game and vanilla, and just a gorgeous, ethereal Margaux perfume. In the mouth the tannins are now resolved of course, but the fine-grained, supple nature is lovely and the fresh acidity gives this an alert, still energetic character at 33 years of age. Wonderful fruit, again just touched with cedar and game on the palate, but a depth of blackcurrant and edged by black plum and chocolate bittersweet notes. Long, not fading in the glass after an hour, and possibly with substantial time ahead for well-cellared bottles."

yr. 1964 Doctorwine:

99 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Chateau Margaux, Margaux, France" from the vintage 1964 on 01.01.1970 with 99 of 100 points.

"If this was not the wine of the day it came real close. The unnaturally red color has only some orange nuances on the edge. The bouquet is an explosion of balsamic sensations, holly, tanned leather and lots of spice. The pepper is abundant as are the sensations of blood in the background. The mouthfeel is still taut thanks to an epic yet not invasive acidity that is in perfect balance within a structure of unique elegance. The fine and thick tannins have by now settled but tactilely lift everything to a higher level. A wine dreams are made of."

yr. 1999 Doctorwine:

96 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Chateau Margaux, Margaux, France" from the vintage 1999 on 01.01.1970 with 96 of 100 points.

"The unnaturally red color is bright and resplendent while evidence in the aroma of aging in wood is long gone and the bouquet is now of seaside brush, minerals, resin and spice. The mouthfeel is formidable, energetic, bold and austere."

yr. 1994 Doctorwine:

93 of 100 Points.

"Doctorwine" has rated the wine "Chateau Margaux, Margaux, France" from the vintage 1994 on 01.01.1970 with 93 of 100 points.

"Small garnet hints tend to create fascinating smile lines in the wine’s color, while the aroma remains extremely fruity, dominated by notes of roots and hide, cacao and nutmeg. The mouthfeel is taut yet not overly so, well-balanced, elegant and aristocratic."

"Gilbert & Gaillard" has rated the wine "Chateau Margaux, Margaux, France" from the vintage 2012 on 01.01.1970 with 97 of 100 points.

"EN PRIMEUR - Subtle nose, fresh fruit, a floral tone and a mineral touch. Ample, full palate that is delicate yet well-structured. The oak is melted and fruit enjoys good exposure. Long, racy finish infused with graphite notes and mild spices. Remarkable."

yr. 2010 Tom Cannavan:

98 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Chateau Margaux, Margaux, France" from the vintage 2010 on 01.01.1970 with 98 of 100 points.

"Absolutely exquisite aromatics, with the Margaux perfume already soaring from the glass. Kirsch and a touch of herby charter, background notes of Sandalwood and floral aspects. Fantastic palate, the silky texture of the tannins and the fruit, the beautiful natural concentration without any effort. The fruit is wonderful, with an iron fist in a velvet glove . Talcum soft tannins, beautiful balance and purity in to a long, perfectly focused finish. Not a single touch of tannin dryness. Only 13.5% alcohol too."

yr. 2007 Gilbert & Gaillard:

98 of 100 Points.

"Gilbert & Gaillard" has rated the wine "Chateau Margaux, Margaux, France" from the vintage 2007 on 01.01.1970 with 98 of 100 points.

"Intense colour. Deep, pure bouquet of blackcurrants, cherries some fine, slightly minty oak, all underpinned by lovely minerality. A touch tight in the mouth but fine with silky tannins, remarkable balance, lovely length. Delicious fruit purity."

yr. 2007 Tom Cannavan:

93 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Chateau Margaux, Margaux, France" from the vintage 2007 on 01.01.1970 with 93 of 100 points.

"Intense, ripe, cassis, somehow rather impenetrable at first, but opens out well. Plenty of fruit sweetness, moderate tannins. Not a blockbuster, perfectly in tune with the vintage and the Margaux terroir, very fine."

yr. 2005 Tom Cannavan:

96 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Chateau Margaux, Margaux, France" from the vintage 2005 on 01.01.1970 with 96 of 100 points.

"Paul Pontellier was very upbeat about his 2005, which is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, because "In really great vintages the Cabernet Sauvignon from our gravel soils is extraordinary. Most of our Merlot cannot marry with it. We had only one small parcel that we could use; so only 37% of our production is Margaux this year. This is the wine I have always dreamed of making at Margaux - incredibly powerful and intense, yet also light and elegant." He has succeeded in that, with a real density at this stage that is pretty impenetrable at first (more so than Latour) and such a massive framework behind the nose of tannins and fruit and searing acidity, yet there is finesse and a real sense of purity and focus. This is for the long haul, but is spectacular."

yr. 2006 Tom Cannavan:

93 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Chateau Margaux, Margaux, France" from the vintage 2006 on 01.01.1970 with 93 of 100 points.

"90% cabernet sauvignon and only 4% merlot. Only 36% of crop into the first wine this year. Quite a firm, mineral-edged quality with plenty of black fruit. Tight and glossy, with a dark plumskin and black chocolate nuance. The palate is very tight and structured, with big, rich, chocolaty tannins with plenty of grip and a chalky dryness plenty of concentration here. Very cabernet sauvignon."

yr. 1961 Tom Cannavan:

91 of 100 Points.

"Tom Cannavan" has rated the wine "Chateau Margaux, Margaux, France" from the vintage 1961 on 01.01.1970 with 91 of 100 points.

"A sense of composure and elegance here, with a nice Margaux perfume of red berry and cherry fruit, a little hint of plush blackcurrant and a touch of game. The palate is a touch lean, but it is composed and focused, with some layers of earthy and vegetal notes. Has a bit of depth and decent structure, though not a million miles ahead of other Margaux in this flight."
