The 2015 Gigondas le Claux is a single vineyard planted around 1880. This all-Grenache wine is at once warm and ruggedly tannic yet also laden with ripe mixed berries and spice. Its a perplexing wine to evaluate, with contradictory signs regarding balance and longevity. If it comes together, my rating will ultimately look conservative.
It is always fun to taste with the energetic Louis Barruol in his Roman-era cellar. There seems to be a nearly endless supply of wines to taste, as he now produces five different Gigondas and numerous bottlings under his ngociant label plus a joint venture in New Yorks Finger Lakes, for those who might not know. The prospective samples of Barruols 2016 Gigondas were tasted blind at the local syndicat earlier the same day, while reviews of his Northern Rhone wines are scheduled to appear in issue 234.
Wine Spectator 97 points - Dark and dense, with a baker s chocolate frame around an immense core of crushed plum, warm fig and boysenberry reduction flavors, while the back end brims with roasted apple wood, warm tar and licorice root notes. Will take some time to fully meld. Best 2020 through 2040. 475 cases made. -JM (Nov 30 2017)
Jeb Dunnuck 99 points - I loved the 2015 Gigondas Le Claux barrel (really loved it), and this beauty doesn’t disappoint bottle. Checking in as 100% Grenache (100% whole clusters and aged in 20% new barrels) a site located just across the street the Hominis Fides vineyard, it offers a heavenly bouquet of blackberries, blueberries, camphor, graphite, and licorice. Sensationally concentrated, rich and opulent, with low acidity, gorgeous purity, and a blockbuster finish, it stays light on its feet and graceful. It’s the greatest vintage of this cuvee to date, and you should buy as much as you can. (Oct 2017)
