Jg. 1955 Doctorwine:

97 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1955 am 01.01.1970 mit 97 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"As is always the case, everyone was in awe when this old bottle from the ambassador of Italian wine excellence was opened. There were no surprises only the confirmation that this is a great masterpiece of nature as well as human genius. The color is a bold orange that still has traces of red at the center, while the aromas are incredibly balsamic with notes of blood orange and wild mint. The mouthfeel is mellow, soft yet taut and the tannins have amazing finesse."

Jg. 2000 Doctorwine:

97 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 2000 am 01.01.1970 mit 97 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"The cellar was so dark I picked the wrong vintage but no matter, this remains one of Italy-€™s best wines for quality. The color is a distinct garnet-red with a nice though unusual concentration for a Monfortino, perhaps due to a hot growing season that enhanced the texture. The intense aromas include black cherry jam, red fruit and watermelon along with typical mentholated and ethereal notes. The devastating mouthfeel achieves impossible balances between the citrus and spice components, while the persistence it eternal."

Jg. 1999 Doctorwine:

97 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1999 am 01.01.1970 mit 97 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"Made from only Nebbiolo grapes, this Monfortino is perhaps the most complex and typical version from the 1990s. The grapes came from vineyards that border between Serralunga and Monforte and were as classic as you can get for a Barolo. The wine had a distinct and typical garnet color and broad, detailed aromas dominated by smoky notes and scents of tar and licorice which exalt the mineral sensations that generally develop after ten years in the bottle. In this case they were perfectly developed. The impact of the mouthfeel was pronounced and opened with an almost brackish acidity to then continue with a profile that charmingly rustic with distinct tannins. All these elements contributed to giving this wine a long and positive prospect of aging further. The finish was, obviously, very long."

Jg. 1995 Doctorwine:

96 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1995 am 01.01.1970 mit 96 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"Here the color is paler with distinct orange reflections which are almost those of twilight. The bouquet is extraordinary, incredibly varied and detailed, decidedly floral yet tarry. The balsamic component is the estate-€™s trademark as are the mineral notes and those of medicinal herbs. The mouthfeel is silky and fresh and the aftertaste is infinite."

Jg. 1961 Doctorwine:

100 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1961 am 01.01.1970 mit 100 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"I have to agree with Daniele Cernilli, AKA Doctor Wine, that this is among the greatest Monfortino ever tasted and ever made. It has a clear garnet color with luminous, bright reflections that are frightening for how they have withstood the test of time. The way it has aged in the bottle is not just textbook but a dream come true. Its aromas are something exotic recalling the East on the one hand and the freshness of the moors in the autumn on the other. The way it changes in the glass is beyond description, continually evolving without ever conceding an iota. The mouthfeel is very fresh and savory, mineral and silky. Astounding, a true organoleptic phenomenon that can rival the world-€™s greatest wines known for aging long."

Jg. 1964 Doctorwine:

99 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1964 am 01.01.1970 mit 99 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"An historic year and an historic Monfortino. The color is still the classic -€˜Barolo-€™ clear red with coquettish orange nuances that remain lively, transparent and strong. The aromas are more varietal than ever with wild berry jam and, above all, a lot of spice, those spices used for roasts like juniper and cloves, accompanied by the ever-present sweet licorice. These are followed by notes of eucalyptus and pine needles. As always, the mouthfeel is a very precious cloth that caresses the palate."

Jg. 1967 Doctorwine:

99 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1967 am 01.01.1970 mit 99 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"This Monfortino has reached its peak, full maturity. I adore this vintage that over the years has shown itself to be among the greatest, a true masterpiece. The color is even more intact than the two, previous younger vintages and the nose is a fireworks display of a multitude of different sensations. The aroma-€™s many sides and intensity recall those of a Pinot Noir, with a great floral sensation and acute top notes. The mouthfeel is epic, something to remember for years to come."

Jg. 1958 Doctorwine:

98 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1958 am 01.01.1970 mit 98 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"This is perhaps the Monfortino vintage I have had the most of, since my grandfather filled the cellar with it because it was the year I was born. During the 1990s I opened a bottle for nine birthdays in a row. More recently a couple of bottles worked their way into some memorable tastings and as always with moving results. It still sums up all the qualities of a mature Monfortino: boldness, vigor, elegance and complexity. A diffused balsamic component remains the leitmotif along with some bewitching and seductive chocolate. The mouthfeel by now seems to have completely settled to become a very caressing drape, albeit a vigorous caress, marked by a consolidated tannic acidity. A dream wine still at its peak."

Jg. 1937 Doctorwine:

98 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1937 am 01.01.1970 mit 98 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"This is what I wrote last year; -€˜-€™-€¦tears came down like rain, tears of joy, of emotion and of surprise. This was a bottle that had lived through the Second World War and was around when most of our fathers were born. And yet here we were tasting this unique nectar of inspired expression and masterful winemaking. The color was rather pinkish but still had intact nuances and rarely have I experienced such original sensations. It still had the same common traits of more recent vintages but everything shifted more towards an almost virginal candor of -€˜the first time-€™. The aroma was suffused, compressed, always with those light notes of mushroom, dried flowers, bergamot and licorice. The minerality was that of a great Chablis while the acidity was still crunchy, apparently the true secret to eternal life. Its true force was its suffused balance, the finale was indescribable. Our only regret was not having tasted it some years earlier when it was at its peak, even if it still was pretty close to it. A relic only found at an auction, where it can demand the same prices as the world-€™s greatest wines, be they from Bordeaux or Burgundy."

Jg. 1952 Doctorwine:

97 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1952 am 01.01.1970 mit 97 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"Another truly incredible wine. Its bold garnet color continues to have a pulsating texture, while the aroma demonstrates its great vitality by inebriating you with soft notes of white pepper, incense, mint and a slight bitter touch of cinchona bark and rhubarb. Oddly enough, the mouthfeel is not at all inclined to docility and remains austere, stimulating and energetic. The aftertaste is eternal. 600 euros (auction prices)"

Jg. 1926 Doctorwine:

97 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1926 am 01.01.1970 mit 97 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"A moving experience. Its orange color is relatively bold and so one would assume that this wine, no matter how distinguished it may have been, had gone off. A big mistake. This 1924 is among the best Monfortino vintages of all time. Since I risk not doing it justice with my description, the following are the observations of my friend Augusto, a department chief at Rome-€™s Università del Sacro Cuore. -€˜-€™My fellow companions at today-€™s tasting will forgive me if, while I fully agree with them that the 1961 Monfortino was the best of the tasting, I cannot help forget, no matter how hard I try, another vintage. This one had an orange color brightened by luminous reflections and a lively aroma with scents of fallen autumn leaves and the smell of the ground they have fallen upon. There were also a notes of wilted rose petals, black tea, nougat, coagulated blood and fungus. The mouthfeel was wrapping, the acidity still upheld a body in which resolved tannins allowed you to alternately identify of sweet and spicy notes which together with elements from bottle aging gave the wine a lightness, pleasantness and persistence that made it truly unique and unforgettable. This wine, thanks to a cork that kept it perfectly sealed and the impeccable way it was stored, won its battle against oxidation and time. It will forever be impressed in my memory-€™-€™. Price: Whatever an auction will fetch (I have refused 1,000 euros for one that I have)."

Jg. 1996 Doctorwine:

98 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1996 am 01.01.1970 mit 98 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"This is one of the greatest Monfortino and, at the same time, one of the least understood. When it came out many were quite surprised by how hard and rebellious it was even with its extremely -€˜strong-€™ structure. Not everyone understood its enormous potential. Today it is a solemn wine, even if slightly closed. The color is practically intact, a relatively clear, luminous and transparent red. It is robust starting with the nose, remarkable for how solid and rigorous it is. The product of a memorable year in the Langhe, it expands on almost blood-like notes and those of iron, crushed rose and holly. In the mouth the tannins are still incredibly effective, scratching and thoughtlessly captivating. The attraction between the wine and one-€™s taste buds risks being fatal, one of the best versions of this wine of all time, if not the best."

Jg. 1978 Doctorwine:

97 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1978 am 01.01.1970 mit 97 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"Phenomenal. Here again age has given it nuances and aspects that youth had denied it. This 1978 is pure sensorial poetry. The color has remained luminous even if it is a bit more faint. The aromas are inebriating, although by now dominated by ethereal maturity and balsamic notes. However, this in no way means aging in the bottle has repressed the wine-€™s killer instinct to hyper-stimulate taste buds, quite the contrary. The details of the bouquet are at their utmost level, very difficult to identify as they evolve in the glass. The mouthfeel has become a silk drape, caressing where it once almost raped. The wine-€™s energy is still amaing, just as its infinite aftertaste is surprising."

Jg. 1987 Doctorwine:

96 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1987 am 01.01.1970 mit 96 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"This vintage, on the other hand, is a -€˜classic-€™ and the wine is extraordinary, one of the favorites of the late Giovanni Conterno (Roberto-€™s father and a dear personal friend). It is intact, astounding for how suavely delicate and balanced it is, with its aromas of roots, sweet tobacco and licorice stick and in the dreamy background some pansy. The bouquet again has that citrus component I love so much along with some background honey mushroom. The mouthfeel is incredibly effective with its gushing acidity, unparalleled silkiness and the amazing way it captivates. A difficult wine to resist, one that it almost at its peak 25 years after harvest."

Jg. 1974 Doctorwine:

94 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1974 am 01.01.1970 mit 94 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"It is extraordinary the way this Monfortino plays on chiaroscuro. The color is identical to the 1978 even if the aroma may be less intense. The bouquet again has scents of underbrush, fallen leaves and new mushrooms, along with the usual mint and some spicy notes. The finish is surprising and moving with its return of dark chocolate, Cavendish pipe tobacco and the wealth of balsamic nuances. The mouthfeel remains dominated by that type of acidity that makes it eternal and bonds with very understated and silky tannins."

Jg. 1997 Doctorwine:

94 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1997 am 01.01.1970 mit 94 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"Despite the fact that critics have contrasting opinions on this vintage, at first praising it and later panning it, this 1997 Monfortino was a delight. The color at first could be of concern with its distinct garnet hues but then looks can be deceiving for this wine is intact and impressive. The aroma is quite original with scents of black cherry jam, blackberry and pomegranate. The classic note of watermelon is very light and comes out only after breathing along with those of cut grass and chamomile as well as initial citrus note. A wine to drink by the bucket."

Jg. 1998 Doctorwine:

92 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1998 am 01.01.1970 mit 92 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"Here the wine has a lovely appearance with its slightly vintage color that announces sensations that are certainly not in decline. The aroma is of underbrush, branches and damp humus, moss and -€˜noble-€™ mushrooms. The mouthfeel is almost subtle compared to the other wines, making it extremely drinkable and refreshing. Monfortino never ceases to amaze you and this classic one is ready to drink and enjoyed."

Jg. 1988 Doctorwine:

91 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 1988 am 01.01.1970 mit 91 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"I have had this often in recent years and it was rarely the same. This sometimes due to dubious corks, others because the consistency that created problems. Yet even when there were no issues this vintage never gave me the sensations of the classic years, even if 1988 was celebrated by critics. The color here is a light red leaning towards orange, the nose is as always variegate with underbrush, humus and maybe some noble mushroom. The fruit component by now has almost completely been resolved and the mouthfeel, while still silky, has lost its grip and is not up to par. 380-420 euros (almost impossible to find)"

Jg. 2006 Doctorwine:

97 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 2006 am 01.01.1970 mit 97 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"Its sneering youth is devastating. Yet deep inside this is one of the greatest Monfortino of the last 30 years. The color is a very lively, luminous and iridescent red without any dark or impenetrable hues. The nose is relatively intense, all compressed into a giant sensorial package ready to explode. I have been monitoring it for over five years, from when it was still in the barrel, but it never has been so gnarling. With its enormous potential and eternal perspective it penetrates the senses with scents of eucalyptus, minerals and ripe red fruit. The mouthfeel is serried with tannins that are still a bit rough, an acidity that is almost hydrochloric and yet-€¦ and yet it is a wonder for the palate against which it battles almost violently. However, a trained and expert palate, when challenged like this, seeks to dominate it as if it were a wild horse. Impressive. Rating: 97 (today for in the future it will rise even higher)"

Jg. 2004 Doctorwine:

96 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 2004 am 01.01.1970 mit 96 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"A 100 for Robert Parker. This, too, is already extraordinary and less shy than the 2006, evidence of what aging an extra two years in the bottle can do. It has the usual color, luminous but never too intense. The nose has many sides to it although its youth keeps it somewhat suppressed. Monfortino generally needs many years in order to express itself with intensity and after nine years this stage has only begun. The bouquet takes time to explode in the glass and includes the usual notes of watermelon, pansy, mint and various ones of underbrush. The mouthfeel is solemn, almost highbrow, austere and stimulatingly devastating. The aftertaste is eternal, unforgettable."

Jg. 2001 Doctorwine:

95 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 2001 am 01.01.1970 mit 95 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"Wonderful, now we are getting somewhere after all the aggression of the previous vintages. The overall impression is that it is solemn, starting with its bright, red, intact color. It is almost as if it had been embalmed for 12 years. And yet only today is it beginning to show its true nature. The aroma has an outstanding complexity as it evolves in the glass continuously for hours. The mineral notes are almost unique, the structure multi-layered to allow each sniff to discover new sensations, from cardamom to ginger, rhubarb to currant, to the usual (and here Roberto would kill me) watermelon scent that wonderfully distinguishes it. The mouthfeel is lively and vivacious, stimulating and untamable. A Monfortino of great class and authority."

Jg. 2002 Doctorwine:

95 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 2002 am 01.01.1970 mit 95 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"A strange year that produced an original Monfortino which was, in certain ways, stylistically unusual. Given the poor harvest you would never have expected it to have such a rich color. Roberto (Conterno) interpreted the situation magnificently and waited for better weather to pick the grapes, which meant that all those from Cascina Francia were just used for Monfortino. For years he had doubts over this but what came out of the barrels proved it was the right move. The aroma is strongly stratified and balsamic, which in itself is not rare but never on such a level as this. It is not overbearing, in fact it is strongly marked by balances that border on perfection. The intensity is varied and while not as acute as the 2004 and 2006, it is anything but repressed. There are great notes of geranium and Arabic coffee that clearly stand out on a background of the usual red fruits. The mouthfeel is majestic, still gnarling and never docile. This may not make it to 100 but it will come close."

Jg. 2005 Doctorwine:

94 von 100 Punkten.

"Doctorwine" hat den Wein "Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy" aus dem Jahrgang 2005 am 01.01.1970 mit 94 von 100 Punkten bewertet.

"The color is magnificent, a clear, bright red, as is the aroma of rose, pansy and geranium. With breathing the spectrum of the bouquet broadens to include medicinal herbs and ripe watermelon. The mouthfeel is fresh and mineral with that touch of tannic tartness which stimulates the palate. It is wonderfully drinkable even at this age, perhaps the most ready to drink Monfortino of the millennium together with the 2000."
